Etymology: "Immerges" is the third-person singular present form of "immerge," so it carries the same history as its base verb. "Immerge" comes from Latin "immergō," meaning to dip into or plunge in, built from "in-" (into) and "mergō" (to dip or sink). English also has the closely related "immerse," which shares the same Latin source and the same sense of plunging something under a surface. The verb's modern meaning of reappearing after being submerged is a reversal that the word's Latin core does not suggest on its own. Its basic sense is downward and into, so the idea of rising back out of the water comes from how the word is used in context rather than from the parts of the word themselves.
