Etymology: The ide is a European freshwater fish of the carp family, and its name is a scientific coinage rather than an ancient one. It was taken from the Swedish name for the fish, "id", and adopted into Latin as a species name, "Leuciscus idus", which is where the English word comes from. The fish was described in the scientific literature under that Latin label, and English simply borrowed the scientific name as a common name. The chain of borrowing therefore runs from a vernacular Scandinavian word into Latin taxonomy and then back into English. Because the name passed through the language of classification, it reads as technical, even though its underlying root is an ordinary local term for the fish. Few people encounter it outside zoology or angling, but the word carries no older sense that has since been lost.
