Ibo
Part of speech: noun, adjective
Definitions
- A large West African ethnic group living mainly in southeastern Nigeria ; the Niger-Congo language spoken by that people
- The people of southeastern Nigeria who share a common cultural heritage ; the tonal language that members of this community speak
- An ethnic community native to southeastern Nigeria ; the Benue-Congo language used by its members in everyday life
Etymology: In this sense, English took "ibo" from Cebuano, a language of the central and southern Philippines, and the borrowed form kept its Cebuano meaning as a welcome sign. The English noun and adjective both come from that Cebuano source, so the borrowing is the whole of the story.
