Etymology: Hyderabad is a city in south-central India, and "Hyderabadi" is simply the name for someone or something from it. The word is built from the city name plus the suffix "-i", a common English-adapted ending (borrowed from Persian and Urdu usage) that marks origin or belonging, as in "Pakistani" or "Brooklynite" style formations. The city itself takes its name from Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the Qutb Shahi ruler who founded it in the early 17th century and named it after his beloved Bhagmati, whom he renamed Hyderabad, linking the place to the name of his rule. The adjective covers far more than geography. It is used for the Deccan Muslim culture that flourished under the Nizams, for the distinctive Dakhani Urdu dialect spoken there, and for food such as biryani cooked in the slow dum method, with its layered rice and rich, spiced meats. Because the word attaches so readily to customs, speech and cuisine, it often names a whole way of life rather than only a place of origin.
