Etymology: "Huffingly" is simply "huffing" with the adverbial suffix "-ly" added. "Huffing" is the present participle of "huff," a word that goes back to the sound of forcing air out through the mouth, the same breathy noise a person makes when exasperated or straining. The adverb therefore describes doing something in that puffing, exasperated manner, such as pushing a heavy box up the stairs while letting out an audible exhale. The "huff" in "huffing" also carries the older sense of a fit of sulky temper, as in being "in a huff." The adverb keeps the breath-blowing image rather than the sulk, so it describes the sound of effort or irritation itself.
