Part of speech: interjection

Definitions

  1. An exclamation expressing excitement or approval often used in casual speech ; a term referring to a loud, enthusiastic shout or cheer ; an informal interjection conveying encouragement or enthusiasm
  2. A colloquial shout to show delight or approval ; used as a noisy expression of enthusiasm or support ; a spontaneous cheer or uproar in informal contexts
  3. An exclamatory word signaling excitement or positive reaction ; a verbal cheer typical in informal language ; a spontaneous vocal expression of approval or encouragement

Etymology: Arabic "ḥabba" meant a grain, seed, or small berry. Few words for something so small went on to become a shout of approval. The noun passed into Classical Persian as "habba," which kept the same sense of a seed or bead. From Persian it entered Hindustani as "habba" or "habbā," and English borrowed it from that language. The English exclamation is a cheer, not a seed, so the only trace of the original noun is the borrowed sound.
