Etymology: "Howdie" is an alternative spelling of "howdy," and the two words share a single history. Both come from "how-d'ye-do," a phrase that was literally a question about someone's health and well-being: "how do you do?" Over time the full phrase was shortened to "howdy-do," and then clipped further to "howdy," which is how the greeting survives today. The spelling "howdie" is simply another way of writing that same clipped form. The shortening is the surprising part. A greeting that began as a polite inquiry about how someone was faring wore down, through speech, into a single casual syllable-and-a-half, losing almost all of its original question. The precise date and route of this clipping are not firmly recorded, so the exact moment the short form first appeared remains uncertain.
