Etymology: The word "horndog" puts two old slang terms together. "Horn" had a sexual sense by the late 18th century, when the expression "to have the horn" meant to be sexually aroused, and "horny" grew out of that expression. The "horn" image is a physical one: an erect penis was often compared to a horn, and this slang was widespread in English in that period. "Dog" was already a common insult for a man, and by the time it was attached to "horn" it carried the sense of a sexually aggressive man. Joining the two gives a compound whose parts each describe a kind of male appetite, so the word reads almost as a description of its own meaning.
