Hora

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. An hour, often used in chronological contexts or when discussing time intervals
  2. A measure of time that equals sixty minutes, commonly recognized in both everyday life and scientific contexts
  3. A standard unit for dividing the day into segments, facilitating the organization of activities and schedules

Etymology: Ancient Greek "hōra" meant a season or a fixed span of time. That one root gave English "hour" through one line of descent and "year" through another, so "hour" and "year" are doublets. The Sanskrit "horā", meaning hour, belongs to the same family, and English borrowed the term directly from Sanskrit in the sense of a sixty-minute period. The dance called hora, the circle dance of the Balkans and Israel, is a different word entirely. It descends from Greek "chorós", meaning dance, which also gave English "choir", "chorus", and "quire".
