Etymology: The verb "honoring" is simply the -ing form of "honor," so its story is really the story of the root verb. That root arrived in English by a roundabout route. Latin "honor" (respect, public esteem, office) passed into Old French as "honor," then into Anglo-Norman, and reached Middle English as "honour" and "honur," with the verb "honouren" following. English had its own native words for the idea, though. Old English "hād" meant rank or status, and Middle English "menske" meant honor or dignity among people, borrowed from Old Norse "menskr." English dropped both in favor of the French-derived term, but "mense," a descendant of "menske," survives in the sense of civility and propriety.
