Etymology: "Homesickness" is a calque of German "Heimweh," which literally means "home-woe." The German term was the older of the two, and English built its own version by translating the parts piece by piece: "home" for "Heim," and "sickness" standing in for "Weh," a word for pain or sorrow. The sense of "sickness" in the English compound thus carries the older meaning of ailment or suffering rather than the modern idea of illness. The logic behind the German original is what makes the English compound interesting. Early uses of such expressions treated longing for home as a genuine affliction of the body and spirit, and the English word preserves that understanding in its second element. A person pining for home was, in this way of thinking, suffering a kind of disease.
