Hodling
Part of speech: noun, verb
Definitions
- Keeping cryptocurrency assets for an extended period despite price fluctuations, based on belief in their long-term value
- Maintaining a position in digital currency over time rather than trading actively, betting on future appreciation
- Retaining cryptocurrency holdings through market volatility with confidence in eventual gains rather than selling during downturns
Etymology: The verb "hodl" began as a typo. On December 18, 2013, a user of the Bitcoin Talk forum named GameKyuubi posted a thread titled "I AM HODLING," urging people to keep their bitcoins during a price crash. Other users mocked the misspelling of "hold" in that title, but the spelling stuck and became a slang term for holding a cryptocurrency rather than selling it. Over time, a backronym emerged to justify the spelling: "Hold On for Dear Life." It is sometimes used to explain the word, though it was not the original source of the term, which arose from the misspelling itself.
