Hodler
Part of speech: noun
Definitions

- An investor in digital currencies who resists the urge to sell during market volatility, maintaining their holdings
- A person who purchases and retains cryptocurrency with the intention of profiting from long-term value growth
Etymology: The story of "hodler" begins with a typo. In 2013, a Bitcoin forum user posted a message with the word "hodl" in place of "hold", and the mistake was so popular that it took on a life of its own. The community adopted it as a deliberate term for holding a cryptocurrency through price swings rather than selling, and the spelling stuck as shorthand for that strategy. "Hodler" is formed from "hodl" with the agent suffix "-er", so it names a person who hodls: someone who keeps their digital coins long-term instead of trading them. The suffix is the familiar one from words like "runner" or "reader", so the new term is built from ordinary English parts, even though its base began as a misspelling.
