Etymology: "Highlight" is a plain compound of "high" and "light," and its history is mostly a story of the two parts being joined. "High" descends from Old English "hēah," and "light" from Old English "lēoht," both of which trace back to ancient Germanic roots. The combined noun and verb came into use later, once English speakers began placing "high" in front of "light" to mean a bright, prominent spot or point of emphasis. The sense of the word as a brilliant or striking moment has a clear logic in that construction. Lighting something from above or making it bright draws the eye to it, so a bright spot became a metaphor for something that stands out from its surroundings. Over time that literal picture of illumination gave way to the idea of a moment, scene, or feature that deserves attention above everything else.
