Etymology: "Heterospecific" is a modern scientific coinage, built from two parts that have travelled very different routes into English. The first, "hetero-", comes from ancient Greek "héteros", meaning "other" or "different", a word that also gave English "heterosexual" and "heterodox". The second, "specific", came into English from Old French "specifique", ultimately from Latin "specificus", which means "making a particular kind". Here the Greek and Latin roots were put together in a modern technical context, so the word is a deliberate scientific blend rather than something that existed in classical times. Put together, the two halves mean something close to "of a different species." The word is used in biology and ecology to describe interactions or relationships between organisms of different species, such as a predator and its prey, or two unrelated species competing for the same food. It is simply a precise label that makes clear the relationship crosses a species boundary, and it is paired in scientific writing with its opposite, "conspecific", meaning of the same species.
