Etymology: The prefix "hemi-" is a clipping of "hemisphere", which itself comes from Greek "hēmisphairion", built from "hēmi-", meaning "half", and "sphaira", meaning "sphere" or "ball". Once a word for half of a sphere, it spread into English as a combining form meaning "half" in words like "hemicycle" and "hemiplegia", where the Greek ancestry is more visible. The clipping itself is what gives the prefix its interest: English speakers took the first syllable of a whole word and treated it as a free-standing unit meaning "half." Because "hemisphere" was already a familiar term for half of the globe, the leap from the full word to the bare prefix was a short one.
