Etymology: Helvellyn is the third-highest mountain in England, rising above the Lake District, and its name is older than English itself. It comes from Cumbric, the Brittonic language once spoken across what is now northwest England and southern Scotland, and combines "hal", meaning marsh or moor, with "melın", meaning yellow. Together they describe a yellowish moorland, a description that fits the fell's grassy, sun-faded slopes better than its rocky summit. The name is a reminder that the Lake District's place names were laid down by speakers of a language that died out long before the Anglo-Saxons arrived in the region. Cumbric survived in the north for centuries, and its vocabulary left traces in the landscape that English speakers later adopted without understanding. Helvellyn is a good example: generations of walkers have climbed a "yellow moor" without knowing it.
