Etymology: "Helpe" is simply the Middle English and early modern spelling of "help," and the word has been in English since Old English, where "help" meant aid, assistance, or relief, and the verb "helpan" meant to aid, benefit, or even cure. Its ancestry runs back to a Proto-Indo-European root reconstructed as *ḱelp-, meaning "to help," which also gave rise to a remarkably wide family of Germanic words: German "Hilfe," Dutch "hulp," Swedish "hjälp," and Gothic "hilpan." The Old English noun and verb shared the same core sense from the start, so the word did not drift far from its origins. The spelling with a final "e," which the Middle English period kept in many words, was gradually dropped in the centuries that followed, leaving the modern "help" that now sounds and looks the same in both its noun and verb forms.
