Etymology: The "pad" in helipad is an ordinary English word for a flat landing surface, and the "heli" is a clipped form of "helicopter", which itself was built from Ancient Greek roots meaning "spiral" and "wing". Helipads are therefore a plural of a compound formed in English from two pieces that never belonged together in antiquity: a modern machine name, shortened, joined to a plain word for a level landing place. The helicopter element traces back through French "hélicoptère", coined from Greek "hélix", a spiral, and "pterón", a wing, describing the rotating rotor blades that lift the aircraft. English took the word in the nineteenth-century sense of a flying machine and later clipped it to "heli-", a form that became productive in newer compounds. Adding "pad" gave the plain English description of the purpose: a pad is a flat, cushioned or cleared surface, so a helipad is simply a flat area for helicopters to set down.
