Etymology: Hassan is one name with several unrelated roots, and English speakers meet it in at least four different guises. The Arabic "ḥasan" means "fine, good, good-looking, handsome, manly; strong," and the intensive form "ḥassān" means "doer of good," which is where the name's sense of goodness comes from. Yet the same spelling also arrives from Hebrew "khazán," meaning "cantor," the officer who leads prayer in a synagogue, possibly carried into Arabic-speaking and Ladino communities as "hassan." In that case a name meaning "handsome" and a word for a singing prayer leader share a single written form. The surname has yet another origin. In Ireland, "Ó hOsáin" (descendants of Osán) was anglicized as Hassan, so some bearers of the name have no Arabic connection at all. Irish usage like this is one reason the name appears across so many communities.
