Definitions

- Describing something that comes from or belongs to Guyana or its inhabitants
- Characteristic of the nation of Guyana in northern South America and its citizens
Etymology: "Guianese" is a demonym, a word for a person or thing from the Guianas, the region of northern South America that includes Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The place name is older than the adjective. It comes from the Spanish "Guayana," which European explorers took from an Indigenous term whose original meaning is uncertain. The ending is the plain part. "-ese" comes from Italian "-ese," which descends from Latin "-ensis," and English uses it to form adjectives and nouns of origin, as in "Chinese" or "Maltese." Attaching it to "Guiana" gives "Guianese," a regular formation with no dramatic backstory.
