Guager
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A person or device that measures or determines the size, amount, level, pressure, or capacity of something in a precise way
- One who assesses dimensions or quantities using a calibrated instrument; an apparatus designed to check or verify specific metrics
- An individual specializing in estimation of quantities and dimensions; equipment utilized to test or ensure measurement accuracy in various contexts
Etymology: Before it described instruments, the word named a tax official. A gauger was an officer who measured the contents of casks and barrels so that duty could be charged on what they held. The sense of measuring a container's capacity came first, and the broader sense of measuring any quantity grew out of it. The word comes from Old French "jauger," to measure, which is related to "jauge," a measuring rod or gauge. Its ultimate origin is uncertain, and proposed Latin sources remain unconfirmed. "Guager" is an older spelling variant of "gauger," with the initial sound written "gu" as in French, and it survives mainly in older texts.
