Etymology: Grists is the plural of grist, which in Old English meant the action of grinding and also the corn to be ground. The root is of obscure origin, possibly from a pre-Germanic language or from a Proto-Germanic verb meaning "to crunch," and it is related to "gristle." Its cousins in other Germanic languages carry a harsher flavour: Old Saxon "gristgrimmo" meant "gnashing of the teeth," and German "Griesgram" means a grumbler.
