Griddlecake

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of flat cake typically cooked on a hot, flat surface, often made from a mixture of batter or dough
  2. A dish that can be sweet or savory, served warm and often enjoyed at breakfast or as a snack
  3. A round, thin cake that is usually flipped during cooking and may include ingredients like fruits, grains, or spices

Etymology: A griddlecake is, quite literally, a cake made on a griddle: the word joins "griddle", the flat iron plate set over a fire for cooking, to "cake", a term that once covered any flat, thin baked or fried mass rather than the sweet confection we mean today. The first half traces back through Middle English and Old French to a Latin "craticula", meaning a small grate or gridiron, and the Proto-Germanic root behind "cake" reaches into Old Norse "kaka", which named a flat cake of bread. The pairing is therefore a compound built from two common words, each carrying its own older sense. The word has remained a plain, descriptive term for the thin pancake cooked on a hot plate, and nothing in its history needs more than that.
