Etymology: "Gorefests" is the plural of "gorefest," a compound built from "gore" and the suffix "-fest." The first part is the old English word for blood, especially blood that is thick, clotted, or spilled, and it survives in the sense of gory violence. The second part comes from the German "Fest," meaning festival or celebration, which English borrowed and turned into a playful suffix for an event centred on a particular activity. Ordinary "-fest" words like "songfest" and "sing-fest" follow the same pattern: a gathering built around something. Putting the two together gives a jokingly festive image of a gathering devoted to bloodshed. The pairing was clearly a playful coinage, and the result describes films rather than actual celebrations, so the humour lies in treating a grim subject as a party. The plural simply adds "-s" to count several such events or films.
