Glovemakers
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- Craftspeople or workers who manufacture gloves from leather, fabric or other materials
- Those whose trade is producing gloves for wear, whether by hand or with machinery
- Individuals or companies engaged in the business of making gloves for sale
Etymology: "Glovemakers" is simply the plural of "glovemaker", a compound of "glove" and "maker". The second element, "maker", comes from the Old English "macian", meaning to make or construct, so a glovemaker is literally one who makes gloves. The pattern is transparent and was used freely to name craftsmen by what they produced, as in the many other trades ending in "-maker" in English.
