Etymology: Old English had "glōm," meaning dim light or dusk, and the related "glōmung" for the time when twilight falls. The word has kept that sense of the evening's fading light rather than the darkness that the later word "gloom" came to suggest. In Scots and northern English, the form "gloming" (also written "gloaming") still names the soft half-light between sunset and full night. Its close relative "gloom" moved toward meaning sadness or low spirits, while "gloming" stayed attached to the physical dimming of the sky.
