Etymology: "Glampings" is the plural of "glamping", so it names more than one instance of the luxury camping it describes. The base word is a blend of "glamorous" and "camping", the two halves fused so that the glam- of the first sits on top of the camp of the second. The blend first appears in print around 2005, in The Guardian, and it is the British press that seems to have launched it. By 2007 it had been taken up in the United States, which is where the upscale camping trend it names gained most of its following.
