Etymology: "Giglots" is the plural of "giglot", a noun for a woman seen as bold in her flirting, sexually loose, or lacking restraint. The word is old and English, and its earliest sense was not about sex at all. It belonged to a family of words built on "gig", a term for a flighty or giddy person, often a girl, and the "-ot" ending was used to form diminutive or pejorative nouns from such stems. Over time the word's sense narrowed from general frivolity toward the charge of sexual wantonness that it carries now. Because the etymology of "giglot" is only partly documented, the exact path from "gig" to the current meaning is best understood as a gradual shift in tone rather than a single recorded event. Early uses describe a lively, silly, or unsteady young woman, and the moral judgment grew stronger as the word was applied to women whose behaviour was thought to threaten social order.
