Etymology: In Old English, "giddy" (from "gidig") meant mad, frenzied, or possessed, and it could describe someone seized by a supernatural force. The sense of being dizzy or light-headed came later, and the modern sense of silly, flighty frivolity developed after that. "Giddinesse" is the Middle English spelling of the noun formed by adding the suffix "-nesse" to that adjective, which turns a quality into a state. Medieval writers used it for both the older senses of frenzy and the newer sense of a spinning head, so a single noun could cover wild madness and a swimming brain. The modern form "giddiness" kept the same meaning and simply standardised the spelling.
