Etymology: The name traces back to the Tupi language of Brazil, where "jenipapo" named the tree and fruit that Portuguese speakers later adopted as "jenipapo" and then "genipapo." English speakers in the Caribbean and the Guianas shortened that name to "genip," which is the form you see in the Caribbean's kitchens and bars. The fruit's flesh is used to make drinks and sweets, and its juice darkens quickly on contact with air, a trait that has long made it useful as a dye. Because the same tree is also called genipap in standard English, the two forms are the same word at different stages of shortening. Locals in different islands and regions may use "genip" for different relatives of the fruit, so the name's meaning shifts a little with place.
