Etymology: The spirit that grants wishes arrived in English by way of French, but its Arabic ancestor is the real story. In Arabic, "jinniyy" described one of the unseen beings of the desert and folklore, a creature made of smokeless fire in the Quran and later storytelling. English took the word through French "génie", which already meant "genius" or a guardian spirit, and the two senses blurred together in the translation. The French word was chosen because it sounded close to the Arabic while carrying an existing meaning, a technique scholars call phono-semantic matching. The result is that the English word for a magical servant owes its form partly to a French word meaning intellectual brilliance, a link the modern tale of a lamp-dwelling djinn rarely suggests.
