Etymology: "Gastralgias" is the plural of "gastralgia", a medical term for stomach pain. The singular is built from two Greek elements: "gastr-", from "gaster", meaning stomach or belly, and "-algia", from "algos", meaning pain. The same pairing gives us "neuralgia" (nerve pain) and "cardialgia" (heart pain), so the word follows a standard pattern in which a body part is joined to "-algia" to name a pain in that place. Because the word is a modern scientific compound, it was not used by the ancient Greeks in this form. Physicians assembled it from classical parts to describe a specific complaint, and the combining form "gastr-" appears in many other medical and biological terms, such as "gastric" and "gastropod," which share the same Greek stem.
