Gameification

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The process of incorporating game-like elements into non-game contexts to enhance engagement and motivation
  2. Utilizing strategies such as scoring, competition, and rewards to encourage participation in various activities
  3. Transforming mundane tasks into enjoyable experiences through interactive and playful mechanics

Etymology: The suffix does most of the work. "-ification" comes from Latin "facere," "to make," by way of French "-fication," and it turns a base into the act of making something into that thing, as in "beautification." Attached to "game," it names the process of turning everyday activities into game-like ones. "Game" itself comes from Old English "gamen," meaning joy, amusement, or sport. That older sense of play survives in the modern noun. The standard spelling is "gamification," with no e before the suffix, so "gameification" is a common slip.
