Galanthos

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. Characterizing a type of flowering plant from the family Amaryllidaceae, recognized for its white blossoms and often found in temperate regions
  2. Referring to a genus of perennial herbs typically known for their attractive flowers and association with early spring blooming
  3. Describing a plant known as snowdrop, which emerges after winter and is celebrated for its delicate beauty and resilience in cold climates

Etymology: Galanthus, the genus of snowdrops, takes its name from Greek "gala" (milk) and "anthos" (flower), so "milk-flower" is the literal sense. The Greek name is attested in ancient sources, and Carl Linnaeus adopted it as the genus name in the 1730s, when he set up modern plant nomenclature. The English word "snowdrop" is much older, but the scientific name is what has come down to us in botany. The Greek compound itself is transparent, which makes it a neat example of a naming logic that has stayed the same for over two thousand years. Snowdrops bloom while snow still lies on the ground, and their white, drooping flowers suggested milk drops to Greek speakers. Modern botanists kept the Greek roots when they needed a Latinised name, so "galanthos" in English is simply the classical word carried over into scientific Latin.

Synonyms: snowdrop, flower, bulbous plant
