Fustis

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of club or staff used in ancient times for striking or defending oneself
  2. An implement resembling a stick or baton, often associated with martial practices in classical contexts
  3. A blunt weapon, typically crafted from wood, historically employed in combat scenarios

Etymology: Roman soldiers sentenced to fustuarium, a punishment in which their comrades beat them to death, were struck with the fustis, a heavy wooden cudgel. The Latin word named both this instrument of punishment and the everyday stick a man might carry as a weapon. The word survives in English through a rarer route. "Fustigate," meaning to beat with a cudgel or, figuratively, to criticise harshly, comes from Late Latin "fustigare," formed from "fustis" and "agere," to drive or strike. The ultimate origin of "fustis" itself is unclear, so it is best treated as a standalone Latin term.
