Etymology: "Funerarily" is a plain formation: the adjective "funerary," meaning of or relating to funerals, with the adverbial suffix "-ly" attached to give the sense "in a funeral manner." The adjective itself comes from the Latin "funerarius," a derivative of "funus," meaning funeral or burial rites, and it reached English through the same Latin source that gave us "funeral" itself, which arrived by a separate route through Old French. The adverb is therefore less a word with its own history than a product of English's habit of turning adjectives into adverbs by adding "-ly," a process that is open to nearly any adjective. Its meaning follows directly from its parts: an action done funerarily is done as funerals are done, with solemnity, mourning, or ceremony. Because the adjective is far more common, "funerarily" is best understood as a rarely needed extension of it rather than a term with a distinct story.
