Etymology: "Functioned" is simply the past tense of "function," so its history is the history of the verb "function," which came into English in the 1600s. It was borrowed from Latin "functio," meaning performance or discharge of duty, a noun built from "fungi," "to perform," with a root that also gives English words like "defunct" and "perform"-related senses through the same Latin verb family. For most of its early life the word described an activity or official role rather than a machine. A person "functioned" as a magistrate or a priest, meaning they carried out the duties of that office. The sense of a thing working properly, the meaning this past tense expresses here, grew out of that idea of carrying out a task as expected, and it became common in the 19th and 20th centuries as machines, organisms and institutions began to be described in these terms.
