Etymology: "Fulfils" is the third-person singular present form of "fulfil", the British and Commonwealth spelling of "fulfill". The verb itself is built from "full" and "fil", where "fil" comes from the Old English "fyllan", meaning "to fill". To fulfil something is, at root, to fill it up completely, so that its contents match what was expected of it. Over time that literal sense of filling a vessel extended to filling a promise, duty or requirement, which is why the verb now means to carry out what is required.
