Etymology: "Fulfills" is the third-person singular present form of "fulfill," so its history is that of the verb itself. The verb descends from Old English "fullfyllan," meaning simply "to fill full," and it is built from "full" and "fill," two words that are still recognisable in the compound. Filling something completely was the original and most literal sense. From that physical image of a vessel brought to the brim, the verb moved toward the abstract. A container filled to its limit is complete, and so a promise, prophecy or duty brought to completion came to be described in the same way: a commitment is fulfilled when nothing of it is left unfilled. The sense of meeting a condition or requirement grew naturally from this idea of completeness.
