Etymology: "Fugally" is an adverb formed from the adjective "fugal" with the suffix "-ly", meaning in a fugal manner. Its everyday sense of "with careful spending" is a looser extension of that base. The adjective "fugal" comes from "fugue," the contrapuntal musical form in which a theme is introduced and then passed between voices, each entry overlapping the last. The "-al" ending turns the noun into an adjective, and "-ly" then makes the adverb. Because the word is built straightforwardly from "fugal" plus "-ly," its history is largely that of "fugue" itself. The term entered English from French, which took it from Italian "fuga," meaning "flight," a reference to the way the voices seem to chase one another through the piece. Many dictionaries record "fugally" with its musical meaning first, and the economical sense is the later, figurative application.
