Etymology: Freetekno emerged in the early 1990s among the travelling sound systems of Britain, the free festival and convoy scene that had grown out of the earlier New Age Travellers. The name is a blend of "free" and "techno," and it marked a deliberate split from the commercial rave industry: a movement that treated music, sound systems and open-air parties as shared property rather than tickets to sell. Its adherents were often called "Teknoes" or "Teknos," and the word works as both a noun and an adjective. The scene's identity was shaped by confrontation with the state. Large convoys of vehicles carrying sound systems travelled between free parties, and the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act gave police new powers to break up gatherings playing music characterised by "repetitive beats," a clause widely seen as aimed at raves. Freetekno groups responded by moving faster and more widely, and the movement spread to other European countries, where local versions developed with their own sound systems and anarchist or anti-capitalist politics.
