Etymology: "Freerides" is the third-person singular present form of the verb "freeride," meaning to benefit from something without paying for it. The verb is a compound of "free" and "ride," so "freerides" is simply the verb form that goes with "he," "she," or "it," as in "she freerides on her roommate's internet." The base word tells the story. "Ride" in the sense of travelling on something has long been a verb, and "free" meant without cost, so a freeride was a journey taken without paying the fare. The figurative extension to any benefit gained without paying, or without contributing one's share, grew naturally from that picture of someone riding along on another's effort or resources. The origin of the compound is plain, with no single coiner or famous episode behind it.
