Foulards

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A type of lightweight scarf or shawl often made of silk or similar materials used for fashion or warmth
  2. An accessory worn around the neck or head, typically characterized by colorful patterns
  3. A garment that can serve as a stylish addition to outfits, often seen in various prints and designs

Etymology: The plural "foulards" is the form of "foulard," a word English borrowed from French. In French, "foulard" names a light, silky fabric, and the scarf or neckerchief sense grew out of that cloth. The fabric itself was valued for being thin and soft, which is why the same name came to cover the accessory cut from it. Because the word came into English as a French loan, it kept its French shape and pronunciation, and English speakers still tend to say it with a French-style final syllable. The plural is simply the regular English "-s" added to that borrowed form.
