Foresprecan

Part of speech: verb

Definitions

  1. To plead or argue for someone in advance, speaking in their favor before a judgment or decision is made
  2. Describing the act of interceding for another person by speaking up for them before a formal hearing begins
  3. Acting as an advocate by voicing support or making a case on another's behalf ahead of some proceeding

Etymology: In Old English, two prefixes looked nearly identical: "fore-", meaning "before" or "on behalf of," and "for-", which could intensify a verb or reverse its force, much as German "ver-" does. Attached to "sprecan" (to speak), "fore-" gave the sense "to speak for, plead, intercede," while "for-" produced "to speak against" or, most strikingly, "to bewitch by speech," as if words alone could cast a spell. Middle English kept some of this range in forms like "forspeken," which likely still carried the sense of bewitching. The verb then faded, and its modern form, "forespeak," survives mainly in dictionaries as an archaic term, so its meanings of defending someone and cursing them now belong to the past.
