Etymology: "Foliations" is the plural of "foliation", a noun meaning the arrangement of leaves on a plant stem or bud. The singular came into English from French "foliation", which in turn is based on Latin "folium", meaning "leaf". The same Latin root gives English "foliage", "folio" and "portfolio", the last of which originally referred to a case for carrying loose sheets of paper.
