Etymology: A flyspeck is exactly what the name says: the dark dot an insect leaves behind, often on a window, a painting or a lampshade. The compound joins "fly," the familiar insect, to "speck," a small spot or particle. Because the first half names the cause and the second names the mark, the word describes both the stain and its source in a single breath. The meaning has also drifted in a useful direction. Speck itself is the older, more general word for a tiny mark, so "flyspeck" narrows it to one particular kind of blemish. Writers have since borrowed the term for anything that is trivially small in scale, which is why people sometimes describe a tiny town or a minor detail as a flyspeck.
