Etymology: Flickr is a product name, and its name came from a domain-name setback. The founders wanted "flicker.com," but its owner refused to sell it. Co-founder Caterina Fake then suggested "Flickr" instead, and Stewart Butterfield, the other co-founder, said the spelling helped the service stand out. The word builds on "flick," an informal term for a photograph, with the agentive ending "-er" attached. It is a respelling of "flicker," the verb meaning to flash or flutter, so the name carries a faint echo of the older word while pointing to snapshots.
Synonyms: photo sharing site, image hosting service
