Etymology: "Flashbacking" is the present participle and gerund of "flashback," so its story is really the story of the noun it grows from. "Flashback" is a compound of "flash" and "back," and the two parts make the sense easy to see: a sudden flash that carries the viewer backward in time. The word's first use in film is a good example of how the sense was built from the picture itself, since a flashback is a scene that cuts abruptly to something that already happened. From that cinematic sense, the word spread into everyday speech for any sudden, vivid return of a memory. Speakers of English now use "flashbacking" in the same way, to describe the act of having such memories break into the present, whether they are pleasant recollections or distressing ones.
