Flagpoles
Part of speech: noun
Definitions
- A tall structure designed to display a flag, typically found in public spaces
- An upright pole from which a flag is hoisted, often marking buildings or events
- A vertical post used for mounting flags, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes
Etymology: Flagpoles are simply what the name says: a pole for a flag. The word is a plain compound of "flag" and "pole," and its parts show the same pattern across the North Sea region. Dutch speakers say "vlaggenpaal," German speakers "Flaggenpfahl," and Scandinavians "flagstang," all built from their own words for flag and pole. The plural "flagpoles" simply adds the usual "-s" to "flagpole," so it refers to more than one such post. Each of the compounds above works the same way, which suggests the idea of a post dedicated to displaying a flag was named in parallel across several neighbouring languages.
